There are a lot of reasons people come to Asheville. The food, the music, the art scene, the mountain air. But every spring a specific kind of person makes a very specific kind of pilgrimage to Western North Carolina, and if you are reading this you might be one of them.
They come for the rhododendrons.
What is rhododendron season and when does it happen?
The Blue Ridge Mountains are home to one of the most spectacular wildflower displays in the eastern United States and rhododendrons are the headliner. Specifically the Catawba rhododendron, a native species that grows in dense thickets across the high elevations of Western North Carolina and blooms in clusters of deep purple-pink that cover entire mountainsides.
Peak bloom typically begins at lower elevations in mid to late May and climbs the mountains through June, reaching the highest peaks around Craggy Gardens on the Blue Ridge Parkway by mid-June. Because the bloom progresses with elevation rather than all happening at once, there is often a window of several weeks when you can find rhododendrons in bloom somewhere in the mountains.
The honest answer to when exactly should I come is that it varies by year depending on the winter and spring temperatures. But late May through mid-June is almost always a safe window to plan around.
Why people seek this out specifically for photos
This is not the cherry blossom situation where you show up, stand in front of a tree, and go home. Rhododendron season in the Blue Ridge is something more immersive than that. The blooms do not appear on isolated ornamental trees planted along a city sidewalk. They grow in dense, wild thickets along mountain trails and ridgelines, surrounding you in color and texture in a way that feels genuinely otherworldly.
When you are standing in the middle of a rhododendron bloom at Craggy Gardens with the mountains rolling away behind you and the light filtering through thousands of pink-purple flower clusters, it does not feel like a backdrop. It feels like you are inside something extraordinary.
That is why people plan trips around it. That is why I get more inquiries in May and June than almost any other time of year. And that is why if this is on your list, you need to book early.
What a rhododendron season session looks like
Sessions during rhododendron season tend to happen at higher elevations along the Blue Ridge Parkway, where the blooms are most dramatic. Craggy Gardens is the most famous spot but there are other locations along the Parkway that offer bloom without the crowds if you know where to look.
These sessions require a bit more planning than a typical Asheville shoot. The Parkway is popular during bloom season and parking can be limited. Timing matters more than usual since the light at elevation shifts quickly. And the terrain is more rugged than a garden setting so we plan accordingly.
What you get in return is photographs that look like nothing else. Lush, luminous, deeply soulful images made in one of the most beautiful natural settings in the country during one of its most fleeting and extraordinary moments.
A few practical things to know
Rhododendron bloom timing is unpredictable and I cannot guarantee the blooms will be at peak on your specific session date. What I can do is stay closely tuned to bloom reports in the weeks leading up to your visit and adjust our timing or location if needed to catch the best of what is happening.
Dress for the mountains. Even in late May the temperatures at elevation can be significantly cooler than in Asheville proper. Layers are your friend.
Arrive with low expectations and high openness. The sessions that surprise people most are often the ones where something they did not plan for turned out to be the most beautiful part of the day.
