If you are planning a trip to Asheville and thinking about booking a photo session, let me save you some research time. After nearly four years of living here and falling deeper in love with these mountains every season, I have strong feelings about where the light is best, which paths are worth wandering down, and which spots will make your photos look like they belong in a magazine.
Here is my honest guide.
The Blue Ridge Parkway
The Parkway is the obvious starting point and for good reason. Winding through the mountains just minutes from downtown Asheville, it offers overlooks, meadows, forested trails, and that particular quality of Blue Ridge light that makes everything feel cinematic.
If you are visiting in late May or June, the rhododendrons will be in full bloom along the Parkway, particularly at Craggy Gardens about 20 miles north of Asheville. This is not just background scenery. People plan entire trips around this bloom. Catawba rhododendrons cover the slopes in deep purple-pink, and if we can get you out there during peak bloom, your photos will be genuinely unforgettable.
The Biltmore Estate Gardens
One of my personal favorite settings for sessions is the Biltmore Estate gardens. Lush formal gardens, stone pathways, massive old trees, and that unmistakable sense of being somewhere very special. The gardens were originally designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the same landscape architect behind Central Park, and that legacy shows in every corner. Access is included in your session price when we shoot here and it is one of my most requested locations.
The Botanical Garden at Asheville
Tucked right next to UNC Asheville, the Botanical Garden is a small, intimate nature sanctuary that most visitors walk right past and never find. Creeks, bridges, native wildflowers, and a quiet that feels miles away from the city even though you are not. I love it for the dappled light and the way the greenery wraps around you. It is one of those spots that photographs far more beautifully than it sounds on paper.
Downtown Asheville: Pack Square Park and the River Arts District
Not every session needs to be in the mountains. If you love the energy of Asheville itself, the city has its own visual magic. Pack Square Park in the heart of downtown offers green space, beautiful architecture, and that iconic mountain skyline framing everything behind you. It is a great choice for anyone who wants a photo that says this is Asheville in a distinctly urban way.
A few minutes away, the River Arts District is full of color, texture, and creative energy. Murals, brick, studios spilling onto the street. If your family or your brand leans more eclectic and artistic, this neighborhood makes for sessions that feel genuinely different from anything else on this list.
The Montford Neighborhood
Montford is one of Asheville's oldest and most beautiful historic neighborhoods, just north of downtown. Wide streets lined with ancient trees, Victorian and craftsman homes draped in flowering vines, stone walls, and that particular kind of green that only comes from decades of undisturbed growth. I tend to work with longer lenses that pull the architecture into soft focus and let the light and foliage do the talking. Montford gives you that old Asheville magic without feeling like a tourist destination.
Hominy Creek Greenway
For sessions that feel more like a neighborhood adventure than a destination shoot, Hominy Creek Greenway in West Asheville is a beautiful local gem. A dirt trail winding along the creek, tall trees, dappled light, and that relaxed West Asheville energy. Short enough to feel easy and spontaneous, beautiful enough to produce images you will love.
Private Gardens and Hidden Gems
Honestly some of my most beautiful sessions happen in places you will never find on a tourist map. Asheville is full of people with extraordinary gardens, stone patios draped in wisteria, meadows at the end of long dirt roads. Over time I have built up a collection of private locations around the city that I share with clients depending on the season and what they are hoping to feel in their photos. Finding your perfect spot is part of the process.
A Note on Timing
Every season in Asheville is its own kind of beautiful. Spring brings wildflowers and rhododendrons. Summer is lush and deeply green. Fall in the Blue Ridge Mountains speaks for itself. And winter has a quiet stripped-down beauty that I personally love.
